Musicians That Hooked Up After Working Together

Music is a collaborative process, and it’s not that surprising to see famous musicians work on songs together. Sometimes that’s all there is to it. Two famous musicians go into a studio, write and record a song, maybe later do a music video together, and then go home. However, at other times, the process of writing—spending all that time together and working out lyrics that evoke emotions—also affects the musicians’ feelings, if you know what I mean.

There’s quite a large number of couples who started dating after working together. Turns out that the great chemistry they had in the studio or on stage was more than professional compatibility, and they caught feelings.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé

Out of all the music industry couples, Jay-Z and Beyoncé feel the most culturally important; they feel like music royalty. They met in the late 90s, and by the time they appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair in 2001, they were already beginning to date. Their collaborations also made the public feel like there was more to it than just working together, especially Jay-Z’s “03 Bonnie & Clyde” and later Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.” There was a lot of speculation before they finally made their public red carpet debut as a couple at the 2004 MTV VMAs. They got married in 2008 and have stuck together through thick and thin, and they even shared the rough and difficult parts of their relationship in albums like Lemonade and 4:44. Basically, those first collabs led to a power couple that went on to take over the music industry like no other.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony

Jennifer Lopez and Mark Anthony didn’t immediately start dating, but their creative partnership definitely kept them close and kept the spark alive for a long time. They collaborated on the hit song “No Me Ames” from Jennifer’s debut album in 1999. Jennifer mentioned that Mark told her very early on, “One day you’re going to be my wife,” which is either very smooth and confident or incredibly intimidating, depending on how you look at it. But they each had their own relationships and marriages before they eventually got together and got married in 2004. They had twins together but then divorced in 2014.

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert

Blake Shelton once fell in love mid-collaboration even though he was married at the time. He and Miranda Lambert performed “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma” in 2005, and they both admitted that they felt immediate chemistry between them. The situation became very complicated quickly after that. Blake filed for divorce in 2006, and the two became a couple very soon after. They got married in 2011, but it didn’t last long. They divorced in 2015. Sometimes love hits you hard and fast, but there’s no guarantee it’ll be forever. Their whole romance seems fittingly country-song-coded, don’t you think?

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller first collaborated in 2013 on the song called “The Way.” Ariana was just launching her post-Nickelodeon career at the time. The song became a huge hit, and while they looked flirtatious in the music video, no one was sure if there was anything there for real. Over the next three years, they kept up with each other, stayed close, and performed together occasionally. The rumours of them dating were swirling online. But it was only in 2016 that Ariana confirmed that they were dating on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. They dated for another two years after that and broke up in 2018.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood

This romance took a long time to develop. Garth and Trish first met in 1987 when they were recording a demo together. It was long before they became country music icons. Garth Brooks later admitted that he felt something for Trisha right away, but they were both married to other people at the time. However, they kept collaborating and working together for over a decade. They even recorded the hit song “In Another’s Eyes,” which won them a Grammy in 1998. It was only after Brooks got divorced in 2001 that his friendship with Trisha became a romance. They married in 2005 and have been together since. So yes, sometimes love takes a scenic route, but the whole “friends first” thing does pan out in the end.

Big Sean and Jhené Aiko

Big Sean and Jhené Aiko made quite a few moody, intimate songs together, and it turns out we were not imagining things; they were into each other for real. They first met in 2012 and instantly had musical chemistry that led to many collaborations. They only officially started dating in 2016, after Jhené Aiko had already filed for divorce from Dot da Genius. Big Sean and Jhené Aiko became one of the most recognisable couples on the music scene in the late 2010s, and they welcomed a son in 2022.

Amy Grant and Vince Gill

Amy Grant and Vince Gill had quite a slow-burn romance, but it definitely started with a musical collaboration. They met in 1993, and both felt like there was an immediate connection, but they were both married to other people at the time, so they kept it professional. They worked together, including Grant’s 1994 duet “House of Love,” and their connection deepened over the years. Gill divorced in 1997, and Grant divorced in 1999. And finally, in 2000, these two lovebirds got married. It wasn’t a whirlwind, but honestly, the slow burn is even more romantic, don’t you think?
