Debbie Rowe: Who Is Michael Jackson’s Ex-Wife and Where Is She Today

Years ago, Debbie Rowe’s name and photo were everywhere – she went from a private citizen to the wife of the king of pop in the blink of an eye. Getting married to any celebrity is a game-changer, but getting married to Michael Jackson was on another level. Once their relationship became public knowledge, Rowe couldn’t go anywhere without being harassed by paparazzi.

Debbie Rowe’s childhood was relatively normal

Rowe was born in 1958 in Spokane, Washington. After her parents split up, she moved to California and attended Hollywood High School in LA, where she graduated in 1977. According to the blog Scott Pearce: Debbie and I weren’t friends, but one time a substitute teacher made us hold hands in class as part of an exercise. Her hands were soft and warm but not squishy.”

She married her first husband in 1982

After high school, she worked as a nurse and medical assistant, and got married to another man before Michael Jackson. In 1982, she married a man called Richard Edelman, who was a teacher in LA. Rowe converted to Judaism for her hubby, but the couple split in 1988 due to financial strain and Rowe being unhappy.

She met MJ at work

In the 1980s, Michael Jackson had two major milestones: Thriller was released, and his skin started to become noticeably depigmented because of vitiligo. Jackson was diagnosed and treated by Dr. Arnold Klein, a Beverly Hills-based dermatologist, and Debbie Rowe was his long-term assistant. Describing the first time they met to ABC News, she said, “I go ‘Hi’. And he goes, ‘Hi,’ and I said, ‘You know what? Nobody does what you do better, and nobody does what I do better. Let’s get this over with. He laughed, and we just became friends. It was just right away.”

They married in November 1996

Rowe was married when she first met Jackson, who was a famous bachelor at the time. He eventually married Lisa Marie Presley, but they broke up in 1996 after she refused to have his children. Rowe consoled him after the breakup, and after becoming closer, they got together, marrying in November 1996 in Sydney, Australia. She was six years pregnant at the time and said that the arrangement was non-sexual and just for the purpose of having his kids.

They welcomed Prince Jackson in February 1997

Rowe broke the news to Michael Jackson at California’s Van Nuys Airport. She was reportedly so happy that he ran around the tarmac screaming. Today, Prince is known for his philanthropic efforts. In 2020, he co-founded the Heal Los Angeles Foundation while studying at Loyola Marymount University. He also made a small cameo on “90210” in 2013, and went on to become a producer on projects like “Nano: Hold On” and, most notably, on the biopic “Michael”.

Paris Jackson was born in April 1998

Named after where she was conceived, Paris Jackson underwent a transformation, going from hidden child to well-known and respected singer and actor. In 2026, she released her second studio album, “Happiest Day of My Life.” One of her songs, called “The Breeze,” features his voice and was written about their relationship, and she calls it a “poem of the sonic variety” and a “letter” on Instagram.

She gave up custody in 2001 and testified during Jackson’s 2005 trial

Rowe gave up her parental rights after stating that she became a mother only so Jackson could become a father, admitting she wouldn’t have had kids if she didn’t love him so much. She told the court, “Michael has been a wonderful father to the children, and I do not wish to share any parenting responsibilities with Michael because he is doing so well without me. I want to forever give up any and all rights pertaining to the children because I believe that by doing so, it is in the children’s best interest.”

A couple of years later, she took the stand in 2005 to testify that Jackson was an upstanding person in the midst of charges of conspiracy, extortion, and inappropriate behavior toward a minor.

She sued Michael Jackson in 2006

After his drama took over her life, she sold the home in Beverly Hills that he gifted her for $1.3 million. In 2006, she sued him for $195,000 in attorney fees, plus another $50,000 for living expenses, claiming that he stopped paying spousal support in 2003. He had agreed to pay her $1 million for the first three years and $75,000 yearly after that. The court ruled in her favor, and he was forced to pay up.

She reconnected with Paris Jackson after MJ died

While Debbie Rowe and Prince aren’t close, she and Paris have grown a close bond, reconnecting in 2013 when Paris was 15. Their relationship is well documented online, and in 2020, Rowe wrote on Instagram, “How lucky am I? Love my daughter” in a post. Similarly, Paris posted on Mother’s Day 2026 in her stories, saying, “Happy Mother’s Day to the lady they used for my template during the cloning process.”

She got re-engaged, diagnosed with breast cancer, and now takes care of horses

Debbie Rowe started over when she got engaged to Marc Scaeffel, a producer and one of Jackson’s business associates, whom she actually testified against in the court case! When he initially proposed, she turned him down, but the friendship turned into a relationship. Today, the relationship status is unknown. Two years later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, going into remission after chemotherapy and radiation in 2017.

Today, she lives a normal life in California, living in Palmdale, California as the owner of Painted Desert Ranch LLC since 2013, where she is also a horse breeder. She takes care of many animals at that ranch.
